A Note About Robin Williams’s Passing

I never met Robin Williams but I am saddened over his passing. I grew up loving him when I was a kid. I have fond memories watching Aladdin, Fern Gully, Mrs. Doubtfire, and Hook multitudes of times with my younger brother. Many stories have circulated demonstrating just what a wonderful guy he was in real life which makes me love him even more.

I am even more heartbroken over hearing that his daughter has been receiving negative, distasteful, grotesque comments from some people over the Internet. The Internet and social media have made many people disconnected from the fact that other people they interact with online are real people, just like them. These people take the word “trolling” to a whole new, disgusting level. Maybe they think that these comments are funny and not hurtful, but they would be wrong. If you would not say something so hurtful to someone in person, why say it to them online? Even if someone has not experienced having a loved one pass, he/she should still be sensitive enough to know that it is not something to be taken lightly.

I hope we can all work towards being better at treating others with more kindness, both online and in real life. Think before you write. Think before you speak.

My thoughts go out to the Williams family.
