Birthday Dinner at Salish Lodge

I recently celebrated my birthday. This was my second birthday as a mom and the second birthday where I realized my birthday just isn’t as a momentous of an occasion as it was before I was a mom; it just feels like any other day. We aren’t people to go out to fancy restaurants, but we had a gift certificate for Salish Lodge that has been sitting around for a few years (you may recognize the outside of Salish Lodge as The Great Northern Hotel if you are a Twin Peaks fan). We made a reservation and my parents watched D. I was excited to finally have a chance to go. We got dressed up, dropped D off at my parents’ house, and headed up to the restaurant.

We were one of the only patrons there when we first arrived. The restaurant, The Dining Room, was dimly lit but had windows overlooking Snoqualmie Falls and the thick trees on the mountain. We were seated in a table right by a window. We decided to go all out and order an appetizer, a main entree each, and two desserts to share. We also each had two glasses of wine. We were served an amuse-bouche of bruschetta, followed by a bread basket with house-made honey butter. I love bread so I was a happy girl. I didn’t take pictures of the food at first because I was afraid of being seen as one of “those people” who have their phones out throughout a meal, but once our appetizer arrived I just had to snap a quick picture of each dish.

Our appetizer was the Seared Diver Scallops. There was a nice touch of citrus to the dish. The rhubarb and avocado complimented each other well. The scallops were just the right texture and tasted lovely.

For the main I received the Pan Seared Wild King Salmon. This salmon was cooked to perfection. It was flaky and had a nice light crust on it. Each bite melted in my mouth. The corn and roasted peaches added another pleasant dimension to the dish and the Parisian gnocchi reminded me almost of a fancy hushpuppy (a Southern dish where cornmeal batter that is fried). My husband got the Lamb Loin. He loved the tenderness of the loin and even enjoyed the morel mushrooms (he hates mushrooms).

For dessert (yes, we had room for dessert) we shared S’mores and a Pistachio “Magnum”. The cherry gel on the Magnum was so bright and vibrant, and you can’t really go wrong with a chocolate covered ice cream bar. They even placed a little sign made of chocolate on the plate that read “Happy Birthday.” The S’mores was my absolute favorite. The chocolate ganache was to die for and the toasted marshmallow was divine. I took great pleasure in each bite and thought about that dessert the rest of the night.

The meal was finished off with a pair of tiny macaroons that came with our check. Those tiny cookies packed a delicious punch.

I have to say, hands down, that was probably one of the best meals I have ever experienced. The food, the view, the service, and my date all made for a memorable evening.
