Yesterday was Chinese New Year and marked the beginning of the year of the sheep/goat/ram. My husband and I do not have any Asian heritage but I joke that I should have been born Japanese as I love the culture. I also love celebrating the Chinese New Year – the festivities, the colors, the symbolism, the traditions, the zodiac, and of course, the food. I actually prefer the Lunar New Year to our Solar New Year (January 1st). There isn’t any pressure to make resolutions and
not stick to them; there’s more of a focus on inviting happiness, good fortune and health into our lives for the new year. The Lunar New Year is more about being surrounded by family rather than a celebration for drinking until the wee hours of the morning.
To kick off the Lunar New Year, we went to our local Asian supermarket and watched a performance. They demonstrated some martial arts and followed it up with a Chinese Lion Dance. Afterwards, the lions and dragon went into the supermarket and paraded through the aisles. Some children fed the lions money which is thought to bring good luck and fortune. D enjoyed the whole thing, but he was quite surprised to see the lion in the produce section.
Last night we filled our bellies with a sundry of food. I laid out a smorgasbord of spring rolls, egg rolls, potstickers, chow mein, fried rice, egg drop soup, and topped it off with red bean mochi. We opened a fortune cookie and called it our “family fortune”. It read: “You will bring sunshine to someone’s life.” I’d say that’s a good omen for the new year.
